Background
Europe’s largest railway infrastructure management firm underwent significant structural changes to a devolved IT model, granting routes and regions greater autonomy in addressing their IT needs. This led to the development of independent applications and systems tailored to specific requirements, resulting in integration challenges and non-standard architectures. To address this, the firm initiated two major projects: 1) the creation of Reference Architectures and 2) the migration of open data from a legacy platform to a modern platform.
Approach
- Developed a series of Reference Architectures tailored to various critical IT capabilities and successfully cleared a rigorous review process by the Architecture Review Board
- Published the approved architectures for widespread adoption across routes and regions
- Provided ongoing support and updates to accommodate evolving technological needs
- Conducted a comprehensive analysis of the existing open data platform and the new open data platform
- Developed a detailed IT strategy roadmap outlining the architecture and steps for migration.
- Coordinated with stakeholders & Implemented the migration strategy, continuously monitoring progress and addressing challenges.
Results
- Enhanced integration and interoperability of systems across the organization.
- Consistent adherence to best practices and industry standards.
- Streamlined development processes, reducing duplication of efforts and resources.
- Improved overall efficiency and effectiveness of the IT infrastructure.
- Successful migration to the new platform, enhancing data publishing capabilities.
- Achieved significant cost savings, estimated at several million GBP.
- Improved data accessibility and usability for public users.
- Strengthened the firm’s IT infrastructure, aligning it with future growth and technological advancements.
